Part VII: Traffic Generation Techniques, PPC
Hi everyone
Well after many weeks I have returned and *possibly* might have some useful content to deliver to you
I’ll let you decide on just how well the content is here — and feel free to respond to the post, below.
Last time I mentioned that we would be looking at traffic generation techniques to your affiliate site, so today I would like to introduce Pay Per Click (PPC) marketing using Keyword Research tools.
Are you with me ?
I have been purchasing a number of keyword research products lately to TEST and see which ones are worth their price tag, and others that should remain anonymous.
There are many on the market, but before we get started, why would you want to pay for your traffic when you can get it for free from the search engines ?
The answer to this is two-fold:
1. A PPC (Pay-Per-Click) campaign is immediate traffic. You don’t have to wait until the Search engines “find” you to get traffic to your (affiliate) site. Now we are talking about sending traffic to your affiliate site so you will be promoting other peoples products, and cash in on the sales of other peoples products. That is how you will be paying for your PPC Campaigns – as well as earning residual cash !
2. You can test the conversion ratio of your site by purchasing a number of “clicks” of traffic. This is as simple as it gets: send 100 people to your site. Did they make a purchase through your affiliate links or not ? Count how many made a purchase through your recommendation, then divide by 100. This is your conversion ratio.
Sound easy ? You bet !!
The main thing with PPC Campaigns is to be in complete control of your budget. Let me be up front with you: you will need to put money up front to pay the cost of your campaigns. Just how much money you need will be up to you. How much you can afford. I would recommend that you set aside at least $100 for a campaign, and spend $20 a day. Then over five days of testing you can determine your most profitable campaign and work from there.
You need to know a little about keyword research.
Now to be honest, if you go in blind then you are likely to lose more money than you generate from your site. That is why you should always perform market research on the keywords to understand how much it could cost you – as well as find lower priced keywords for your campaign.
This is where your life becomes easier with the use of software tools. I personally own several keyword research tools, and when it comes to the “KEYWORD INDUSTRY” there are mega-bucks involved.
For instance, if you can tap just one profitable keyword or keyword phrase then you could become very wealthy ! All you need to do is corner the market – one way or the other – and you will be able to control the traffic to that “niche”.
The thing you need to look out for is the number of SEARCHES compared to the number of SEARCH RESULTS.
For instance, type in the word DVD into Wordtracker Keywords. Last month there were 94,440 SEARCHES for this keyword alone.
Can you guess how many SEARCH RESULTS there are for this keyword ? Over 1.3 Billion ! According to Google’s sandbox, you would pay just over $1.05 to get #1 position in the adwords listing for this keyword. That’s not a big price for that keyword alone, but if you are serious about PPC then it could all add up …
If you were going to rely on your own SEO efforts to market this site, you would have very little chance coming up on the first page of Google or Yahoo! So PPC Advertising could send the right traffic to your site, and very quickly.
I forgot to mention that this sort of analysis can take time and money – so I speed up the process by using Adwords Analyzer – a great system that shows you exactly how many SEARCHES were done using the Wordtracker report, and compares that to the number of SEARCH RESULTS.
Now there’s a number of ways that you can use this software. I use it to locate low cost keywords in order to run PPC campaigns very cheaply for targeted markets. However, if you use it in reverse you can identify the keywords that are complete duds – ie. ones that NO-ONE IS SEARCHING FOR and that you’d be wasting your time if you wanted to use them.
At this point I will introduce you to the term “KEI” – which is a term used in the internet marketing industry that is the ratio of SEARCHES to SEARCH RESULTS. A high KEI means that a particular keyword / keyword phrase could be very profitable. If you just wanted to build sites on the basis of KEI alone then you could have highly targeted keyword sites that would rank very well in the search engines. (That way you wouldn’t need to run PPC Campaigns…)
The KEI Feature is built right into the Adwords Analyzer software, and with a click of a mouse you can sort the list according to KEI.
In addition, Adwords Analyzer can also show the cost of Google Adwords campaigns, so long as you are a registered user of the Google Adwords service (as you need to enter that info into the product).
If you really want to get your sites moving and are looking at keyword research tools, then Adwords Analyzer is one of the best low cost products on the market.
Have you got a bigger budget ? For heavy end-users who want the best, I recommend Keyword Elite. I personally don’t use it, however knowing the strength of the usage on that product, along with the monthly cost, warrants a real thought as to whether I should start to consider using it because it is so darn powerful. I’ll leave that decision up to you…
That’s my 2 cents worth on PPC (for this week) – next time I will introduce another powerful technique for building traffic to your (affiliate) site.
Until then !
